Altered Canvas Niche

The girls in my 'Latest Trends in Mixed Media Art' group started a discussion about niches in art canvases. I did one a while back and want to share what I did here on my blog as well. Keep in mind, this one is 2x2" mini, but the technique could be used on any size you choose.

I will try to explain....

First I take the near completed canvas and decide where I want the niche.
I make an x cut in the canvas and fold the opening back, then
cut more snips in the four flaps to make a circle opening....fray the
thread of the canvas a bit.

Next I made 5 or 6 squares of waterpaper just an inch larger than the
hole opening. The first square I ripped
a hole in the center matching the size of the hole in the canvas. The
next 4or5 pieces, I graduated the ripped holes just fractions smaller
that the first. I used an embossing pen and embossed the ripped edges
of the holes, distress inked too.

Next I stacked them one on top using glue dots(for dimension)
on the four corners of the squares, smallest under the next smallest
and then to the back of the canvas, giving it a
tunnel effect.

Then I backed the hole with a background paper and
added my seed. The back of the canvas is finshed off with cardstock
or chipboard.
Hope that made sense...

Jewelry By Sonell

I had some very exciting mail today! ...and I mean EXCITING!!
Two friends from Nebraska partnered up a few years back and started a business called Jewelry By Sonell, the name derived by combining Sonja and Ellen. They do western jewelry and fine jewelry using Precious Stone. Just beautiful pieces! They have a huge following of great customers already, but they decided to start 2009 by going online with a Blog and an Etsy shop. They needed a little help getting started....so I jumped in to help.

Their Etsy shop is stocked and ready...and their blog is off to a really good start!
The two wonderful necklaces below are wonderful examples of their work...and they are mine!! I can't believe it! It's like winning the lottery!

Please take the time to visit their blog and leave a nice blogger welcome....

Steam Punk My Heart!

I love to play with clay and these steampunk hearts are sure a good way to play and add junk!
CF Originals has great downloads on their site with great steampunk designs. I think the fish is just awesome!

Steampunk is a style, a look, sometimes even a philosophy. It’s all gears and clockwork and levers and straps – a bit of machinery, a bit of fantasy. And of course, the contrasts of textures and different metal colors are just such fun to play with!

Fun Grunge Necklace

Had to SHARE a necklace that I made for myself...and that never happens!
I wanted a fun grunge piece that I could wear with something casual like bluejeans and a sweatshirt. Those are my two Grandsons and the turqoise silver pin with feathers is a reclaimed hatpin that their Dad used to wear in his cowboy hat when he was young. I used aged copper and a bit of grunge board scrap, glass circle and screen...a fun piece to create!

Magical Wand

Time Flies! It sure does for me anyway. I start on a project, hunt and dig through supplies, clean an area to work and before you know it, Hours have gone by before you even start.
My AAWA group is having a wand swap and I knew the minute it was announced that my wand had to be magically enhanced so the recipient could feel the powers this little wand would bestow!

It had to have all the elements of time intensive 'detail' that consumes precious time in the studio. Doll making, woodwork, beading, jewelrywork, computor graphics, painting, stamping, fibers and embellishing. This 'TIME' muse would also have to have a stand so that it could be ready at all times, god forbid she'd be put in a drawer!

Everyone just knows that Time Flies when you are busy with your art, so this wand is magical. You just wave it over your project and say, "I will not be Queen of the Last Minute"!

The Economy and ART

Not so Sure if I Ought To.....

I don't know who to credit for this sweet YouTube, but I found it on Crabby Gabby's Blog.
Heidi creates wonderful ART dolls, is doing all the right things to get them exposed to the public and I would just hate to see her take up golf or something....

quote by Heidi...
"When you create something and no one asks, comments, or bids or buys your stuff, it really does effect ones self esteem."

Heidi girl, I think I can speak for many...That what you do is unique and wonderful!! You are not in this alone and I think many great and gifted women feel the same way. The soft economy and lack of confidence in the government is changing the dollar viewpoints of many, but not the viewpoints of what they consider special art.

No longer are we able to feel accomplished, reassured, inspired or directed in what we are doing with our art by how it is sold and for how much. It's not the TRUE response of the public.

Judging your art's worth or whether there is still an interest in it, cannot be judged by how it sells.

The Art Community as a whole has enjoyed great monitary success in recent years. Finished art in all categories as well as retail merchandise and new product development has seen it's boom days and now with the uncerntainty of the economy, people are just holding back on what they spend their money on. It is no reflection of how they would LIKE to respond to your work. Buyers are just being conservative and cautious with the family's Dollar.
The TRUE reponse to your art will have to be judged in other ways...maybe whether it is selected by a gallery, a shop, a Magazine or perhaps by comments left on your blog or from online art group members... will have to do for now.

Financial Woes should not be our Woes....Art is for the soul.
Who knows what the future has in store for us and being just one generation away from those who told stories of the Depression....here's my advice.
Do what you love, create what feels good and enjoy the fact that at least WE will be entertained by the skills we have (and the stockpiles of supplies in our studios) when the rest of the world will be scambling for survivor skills to keep from going crazy of boredom.

Altered Container

This month we have a Container Mingle with one of my Yahoo Groups and this was my attempt to get in a Spring mood....I soooo have cabin Fever!!! There are tons of great container ideas possible with Valentines Day coming and Easter down the road, but this is just for Springtime's sake. I was glad to put away the Christmas stuff and change up the colors for a while before doing 'red' again for some Valentine's swaps coming up.
Here it is 9:45 in the evening and my UPS man just pulled in the yard to deliver a package. Poor Guy...crappy roads and light snow, late and long hours and he always has something wonderful to say and with a smile! UPS rocks!

January Diet Poem

It was the month after Christmas and all through the house
nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste,
at the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
the wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
and the way I'd never said, "No Thank you, please."

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
and prepared once again to do battle with dirt.
I said to myself, as I only can
"you can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"

So---away with the last of the sour cream dip,
get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip
every last bit of food that I like must be banished
till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie----not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome and life is a bore,
but isn't that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
